Polyrhachis vermiculosa is an exceptionally striking species of ant native to Australia. It is known amongst keepers as  Golden-Tailed Spiny Ant. The name aptly describes its appearance – its dark body, the characteristic silhouette of the genus Polyrhachis and its golden abdomen make it difficult to confuse with other ants.

This species is ideal for those looking for something a little more unusual than the classic starter ants, but who still want a species that doesn’t have complicated care requirements. Their diet is simple and typical of many active exotic ant species. The colony should be provided with constant access to water, and honey, nectars or sugar solutions should be provided as a source of carbohydrates. Protein is best supplied in the form of feed insects, such as mealworms, crickets, cockroaches or fruit flies.

With young colonies, it is advisable to provide small portions and remove any leftovers to prevent the food from going mouldy. The queen establishes a semi-monastic colony, so she needs to be fed at the start.
