Myrmecia nigriceps is a large species of ant. Workers usually measure around 19–23 mm, whilst the queen is even larger. Thanks to their size, it is easy to observe their movements, their reactions to food and their interactions within the nest.

• strong chewing muscles,
• the presence of a stinger,
• striking black and red colouring,
• a single, determined campaign by the women workers.

It is worth bearing in mind that Myrmecia nigriceps do not behave like the calm Messor barbarus or Camponotus nicobarensis. These ants are more skittish, more alert and less forgiving of mistakes. Opening the enclosure, cleaning or feeding must be carried out calmly, without any sudden movements, and always with a well-prepared barrier in place.

Keeping Myrmecia nigriceps is not particularly complicated from a technical point of view, but it does require a sense of responsibility. The biggest challenge is not the temperature or humidity itself, but the ants’ behaviour. This species is fast, aggressive and has a painful sting.

We do not recommend it as a child’s first ant species, nor for anyone who is afraid of insects scurrying about the arena. However, if you already have some basic experience, are able to work calmly with an ant farm, and are looking for a species that offers plenty of excitement to observe, Myrmecia nigriceps could be a truly exceptional choice.

For Myrmecia nigriceps, it is best to provide a formicarium with a clear division between the nest area and the arena. The arena should be spacious enough for the workers to hunt and patrol the area freely. This species does not like cramped, stressful conditions, and with larger workers, an arena that is too small quickly becomes a problem.

The temperature in the formicarium should be maintained at around 24–28 degrees Celsius. A gentle heat source may be used, but always in such a way that the ants have the option of moving to a cooler part of the nest. We do not heat the entire formicarium evenly to a high temperature, as the colony would then have nowhere to escape to if conditions become too dry or too warm.

Humidity should be moderate. Part of the nest must have access to moisture, but the arena should remain fairly dry and clean. Remnants of feed insects must be removed regularly, as mould and mites can quickly develop on a protein-rich diet.

The diet of Myrmecia nigriceps should consist mainly of insect food and sweet liquids. Adult workers readily consume nectar, honey water or sugar water, whilst the larvae require protein in the form of insects. Mealworms, cockroaches, crickets or flies are suitable, preferably served after they have been killed or immobilised, particularly in small colonies.

The first few days after buying a Myrmecia nigriceps

Once you have received your colony, the most important thing is to keep them calm. Do not transfer the ants straight away to a large nest if the colony is small. Give them time to settle down after the journey and place the test tube or starter module in a spot that is free from vibrations, out of direct sunlight, and where you won’t be disturbing them too often.

During the first few days, it is best to keep interference to a minimum. Provide access to water, offer a small amount of sweet food and a small feeding insect. If the ants do not eat straight away, do not panic. After transport, many colonies need time to return to their normal activity.

Whenever you handle them, remember that Myrmecia nigriceps can react very quickly to movement. Do not leave the open arena unattended, do not rush when working with them, and do not treat this species as if they were the docile ants suitable for beginners. In this case, it is better to do everything more slowly but safely.

Myrmecia nigriceps is an excellent choice for keepers looking for large, active and highly entertaining ants. This species is ideal for those who enjoy observing hunting behaviour, reactions to stimuli and natural predatory behaviour.

This isn’t the best choice if you’re looking for ants that are very docile, easy to care for and completely hassle-free. It’s more of a species for someone who wants to take their keeping to the next level and realises that beautiful ants with character also require greater care.
