In the wild, it is found in countries such as Greece, Turkey, Israel, Iran, Syria, Lebanon and Cyprus. These ants are well adapted to drier, warmer conditions, which is why, in captivity, they thrive best at a stable temperature and with access to the more humid part of the nest.

The most striking feature of this species is its colouration. The workers are yellowish-brown, with a darker head and abdomen, making them stand out beautifully against a light background and in their natural cork or wooden nests. As is typical of Camponotus, the colony produces larger major workers – or soldiers – which, over time, become one of the most fascinating things to observe.

The most important thing during the first few months is to ensure the colony has peace and quiet. Young Camponotus colonies do not like being moved around frequently, having their test tubes shaken, or having a nest that is too large. It is best to let them grow in the test tube for as long as they have space, water and a sense of security there.

Feeding Camponotus sanctus

Camponotus sanctus is fed in the usual way, like most species in this genus. They require both a source of sugars and a source of protein.

Camponotus sanctus thrives best in a warm, fairly dry environment with access to a more humid part of the nest. The entire nest should not be allowed to become too dry, but there is also no need to maintain very high humidity, as is the case with tropical species.

A cork, wooden, acrylic or 3D-printed formicarium would be a good choice. It is important that the nest is not too large to begin with. Camponotus sanctus, like other Camponotus species, thrives best when the space grows in line with the colony.

The first few days after buying Camponotus sanctus

Once you have received the colony, it is best to place the test tube in a quiet, warm spot and give the ants time to settle in. There is no need to disturb them unnecessarily during the first few days. Simply check that they have water, and then provide a small amount of food.

It is best to move them to their first formicarium only once the colony has grown significantly and begins to use the arena regularly. Moving them into a large nest too soon may slow down their development and make it harder to keep the nest clean.
