Description

Pheidole sinica – small sprinters with large soldier heads

Pheidole sinica are agile Asian ants with a distinct soldier caste that quickly “get the ball rolling” in the arena after being fed. This is the perfect species if you like dynamic colonies, a clear division of tasks, and the “wow” effect when majors with powerful heads get to work.

Detailed description of Pheidole sinica

In nature, Pheidole sinica inhabits warm, subtropical regions of East Asia. In captivity, they thrive best in stable temperatures of 24–28°C and in a moderately humid nest (60–75%) and a drier, well-ventilated arena. The colony develops rapidly as long as it receives regular supplies of protein (essential for larvae) and sugars (energy for workers).

In the arena, you will see impressively efficient recruitment: scout ants find food, and after a while a phalanx of workers settles in, while majors break up larger pieces. The movement is continuous – sorting, portioning, transporting to the nest. Thanks to its small size, Pheidole sinica is ideal for compact, finely sculpted nests, where social behaviour is clearly visible.

Advantages of breeding Pheidole sinica

  • Impressive female soldiers – a visible difference between castes and majors working on larger food supplies.

  • Fast pace – dynamic recruitment, there is always something happening.

  • Clear logistics – reconnaissance, security, portioning and transport – all on a mini scale.

  • Simple diet – sugars + feed insects; they also readily accept small seeds as a treat.

  • A good “first dynamic” colony – when classics such as Lasius seem too calm.

Breeding – a quick guide

Socket: acrylic/3D printed with smaller chambers; can be slightly darkened; humidification section remains stable.

Arena: dry and well-ventilated; an effective escape barrier is essential – these are very small, clever ants.

Temperature and humidity: 24–28°C; nest 60–75%, arena 40–60%; avoid condensation.

Expansion: modular and gradual – too large a socket “at once” slows down development and hinders servicing.

For whom?

  • For beginners who want a “lively” colony with distinct castes.

  • For intermediate players who value fast play and compact sockets.

  • For anyone who enjoys observing real work coordination on a mini scale.

Would you like to see rapid recruitment, soldier work, and express food service every day? Choose Pheidole sinica. Select a finely sculpted nest, an effective barrier and a food set – and let this colony show you what ant logistics at full speed looks like.
