Ectatomma brunneum is a fascinating species of ant from Central and South America that certainly catches the eye with its appearance and behaviour. These are large, active ants that are very interesting to observe, particularly whilst hunting and exploring their territory.

This is not your typical ‘set up the test tube and forget about it’ species. Ectatomma brunneum requires a little more attention, mainly due to its tropical origin, predatory lifestyle and the presence of a stinger. In return, however, it offers immense satisfaction as a pet and allows you to observe behaviours that you won’t see in many popular ant species.

Description of the species Ectatomma brunneum

Ectatomma brunneum is a Neotropical ant. In the wild, it is found in regions of South and Central America, amongst others, where it inhabits warm, humid environments. The workers actively patrol their territory, forage for food and are capable of hunting small invertebrates.

• Queen: approximately 12–14 mm in length
• Worker bees: usually around 6–12 mm, stocky and easily visible
• Colour: brown to dark brown, with a distinctly predatory appearance
• Character: active, alert, capable of defending their nest
• The colony: is growing at a fairly steady pace, without the rapid increases seen in many popular species
• Hibernation: not required

The greatest advantage of this species is the way it moves and hunts. Worker ants are not merely ‘background’ in the formicarium – they often patrol the arena, react to food and are a lot of fun to watch on a daily basis.

Breeding requirements for Ectatomma brunneum

Ectatomma brunneum thrive best in a warm, stable environment. As this is a tropical species, it is important to ensure they have the right temperature and a damp area in their enclosure.

• Temperature: ideally around 24–28°C
• Humidity: high, particularly in the nesting area
• Formicarium: a nest with an arena would work well, ideally one where the humidity can be controlled
• Enclosure: it is advisable to provide a natural or semi-natural environment within the enclosure, which will make observation easier and give the ants space to explore
• Food: feed insects, e.g. cockroaches, mealworms, crickets, fruit flies; additionally, sweet food such as honey, nectar or water mixed with honey
• Water: constant access to water is very important

Given the predatory nature of these ants, protein is essential for the colony’s proper development. It is best to feed them dead or previously immobilised insects, particularly in the case of smaller colonies.

The first few days after purchase

Once you have received your Ectatomma brunneum colony, it is best to leave it undisturbed for a few days. Place the test tube or nest in a quiet spot, minimise any jolts, and avoid checking on the ants every few minutes, even if the temptation is great. This species thrives in stable conditions but does not cope well with constant stress.

To start with, make sure they have access to water and a small portion of protein-rich food. If the colony is small, don’t overdo the amount of food – it’s better to give them less but more regularly than to leave too many leftovers in the enclosure.

Who is Ectatomma brunneum suitable for?

Ectatomma brunneum is an excellent choice for anyone wishing to try their hand at keeping larger, tropical predatory ants. We do not recommend them as a first species for children or for those who are daunted by the prospect of handling more active ants. The workers have stingers, so it is advisable to exercise caution when feeding them and when working with the formicarium.

However, if you already have some basic experience of keeping ants and are looking for a species whose behaviour is truly impressive, Ectatomma brunneum would be a very interesting choice. These ants can turn a simple feeding session into a little spectacle to watch.
