Description

Camponotus turkestanicus – an impressive giant from Central Asia

Camponotus turkestanicus is one of those species that makes a huge impression at first glance – not only because of its size, but also because of its intense, contrasting colouring. Black abdomens combined with red heads and thoraxes create an amazing visual effect in any formicarium. This species originates from Central Asia – mainly Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan – and is characterised by high resistance and ease of care.

These ants are ideal both for beginners looking for their first larger colony and for advanced keepers who appreciate the stability, activity and beauty of these insects.

Why choose Camponotus turkestanicus?

  • Striking colouring – intensely red torso and head contrasting with a black abdomen.

  • Large size – the queen reaches up to 16 mm, and the workers of various castes are massive.

  • Easy to breed – they thrive in many types of formicaria and are not fussy.

  • Evening and night-time activity – ideal for observation after dark.

  • Stable colony growth – they do not suddenly “explode” with the number of workers, which gives you time to calmly expand your formicarium.

  • They tolerate light hibernation – it can be used, but is not absolutely necessary when maintaining temperatures above 20°C.

Camponotus turkestanicus belongs to the group of so-called “migratory ants” – in nature, they often change the location of their nests in search of better conditions. In domestic conditions, they love varied spaces – with hiding places, pieces of wood and arenas for exploration. Their large workers are extremely active at night, and with the right lighting, you can observe amazing social interactions and colony organisation.

Who is this genre for?

  • For beginners who are seeking larger, impressive ants without significant risk.

  • For intermediate players who want to add something more exotic and dynamic to their collection.

  • For fans of activity – Camponotus turkestanicus love to walk, patrol and explore.

  • For people who do not wish to hibernate but want to have the option for later.
