Description

Camponotus singularis is a unique species of ant native to Southeast Asia, which impresses with its size, colours and unique behavioural traits. It is the perfect choice for advanced breeders who want to expand their collection with something truly spectacular.

Description of the species Camponotus singularis

Camponotus singularis is one of the largest and most impressive ants found in breeding colonies. Queens reach sizes ranging from 18 to 20 mm, and workers from 6 to 15 mm. Their characteristic colouring, which ranges from dark brown to black with a metallic sheen, makes them easily recognisable. The head and thorax are often slightly lighter in colour, which adds to their charm.

These ants are characterised by high polymorphism – there are clear differences in size between workers, which is typical for species of the genus Camponotus. Camponotus singularis are known for their exceptional strength and ability to build complex nest structures.

Advantages Camponotus singularis

  • Impressive appearance: Its large size and beautiful colouring make Camponotus singularis one of the most attractive species to breed.
  • Social behaviour: The fascinating interactions between members of the colony provide breeders with much observational pleasure.
  • Hardiness: These ants are relatively hardy in various rearing conditions, making them more resistant to mistakes made by novice keepers.
  • Polymorphism: The marked variation in the sizes of the workers makes the colony even more interesting.

Breeding instructions and advice

  • Establishing a colony: To begin with, it is best to purchase a queen with an initial group of workers. Transfer the test tube with water, cotton wool and the colony to the formicarium once the colony has grown to its first 10 workers.
  • Formicarium: Camponotus singularis is best kept in formicaria made of 3D-printed material, wood or cork. Earth formicaria may also be suitable, provided that adequate ventilation and humidity are ensured.
  • Temperature and humidity: The optimum temperature is between 24 and 28 degrees Celsius, and humidity should be maintained at 50-70%. Sudden changes in temperature and humidity should be avoided.
  • Feeding: These ants are omnivorous. Their diet should consist mainly of feed insects (e.g. cockroaches, crickets) as well as nectar and honey. You can also feed them special protein and sugar mixtures designed for ants.
  • Hygiene: Regularly remove food debris and dirt from the formicarium to prevent the growth of mould and pests.

Camponotus singularis is a unique species that is sure to attract the attention of any ant lover. With their impressive size, beautiful colouring and fascinating social behaviour, these ants are a real treasure in any colony.
