Description

Camponotus pseudolendus – a two-coloured Camponotus that loves to be the centre of attention

Camponotus pseudolendus is a species that is hard to mistake for any other – its massive queen, distinct soldiers and beautiful two-tone colouring make the colony an instant eye-catcher. It is an excellent choice for those who want ‘larger’ ants, clearly visible in the formicarium, with a distinct division of labour and a steady, even pace of development. It prefers warmth, a more humid nest and a drier arena – a classic among tropical Camponotus species.

Detailed description of Camponotus pseudolendus

In the wild, Camponotus pseudolendus inhabits the warmer regions of the tropical and subtropical zones, where it combines elements of a ground-dwelling and semi-arboreal lifestyle. In captivity, it thrives best at a temperature of 24–28°C, with a moist nest (60–75%) and a well-ventilated, drier arena. Colonies develop in a predictable manner – without sudden ‘explosions’ in population size, which allows time for careful planning of the formicarium’s expansion.

The queen measures approx. 18–22 mm, whilst the workers measure 6–15 mm, with a marked caste polymorphism – ranging from tiny ‘cleaners’ to robust soldiers. The colouring is striking: a black body with golden highlights. Combined with a suitable background in the terrarium, this creates a very impressive ‘display’ appearance.

In the C. pseudolendus colony, they are mainly active in the evening and at night. They create clear pheromone trails, quickly locate the food provided and efficiently divide it up. Smaller workers are responsible for scouting the area, cleaning and caring for the brood, whilst soldier ants take on the role of ‘heavy machinery’ – they break down the harder parts of insects, defend the entrances and guard strategic locations.

Advantages of Camponotus pseudolendus

  • Distinctive soldier ants – clearly visible caste polymorphism, ideal for display and photography.

  • Two-tone colouring – looks great against a light or slightly sandy arena background.

  • Predictable growth – the colony is growing steadily, without any sudden spikes in numbers.

  • No hibernation – as a tropical species, it does not require winter rest, so you can watch its progress all year round.

  • An excellent ‘show strain’ – large, conspicuous workers and calm yet impressive movement around the arena.

How to run a summer camp in practice

The nest is best constructed from materials that retain moisture well but do not encourage mould – cork or a well-designed 3D print with a humidification section works very well. Some of the chambers should be shaded; ants are keen to move their larvae there.

In the tank, use a sand and mineral substrate, add a few decorative elements (bark, stones, driftwood) and make sure to include an escape barrier (talc alcohol) – especially for larger colonies. Sugars are best served in small containers or jelly pots to prevent the syrup from spilling over the edge of the arena.

Feeding:

  • sugars – water with honey or carbohydrate-based jellies can be available practically at all times (replaced every 1–2 days);

  • protein – 2–3 times a week, serve up cockroaches, crickets or larvae (preferably dead or chopped), and remove them within 24 hours so as not to attract mites.

Who is Camponotus pseudolendus suitable for?

  • For those who have already had some experience with ants and are looking for a larger, more striking species.

  • For keepers who enjoy colonies with soldier ants and a distinct caste system.

  • For those who want year-round monitoring without hibernation, in a warm, tropical environment.

If you’re looking for ants that really ‘look the part’ – with a large queen, clearly visible soldiers and two-tone colouring – Camponotus pseudolendus will be just the ticket. Provide them with a warm, slightly damp nest, a dry arena and regular portions of sugars and protein, and they will reward you with a peaceful yet spectacular display in your formicarium. Add to basket and start building a colony that’s a joy to watch.
