Camponotus cruentatus, also known as blood ants, are characterised by their impressive size. Queens can reach up to 16 mm in length, while workers range from 4 to 14 mm. Their bodies have a unique chestnut-black colouring, which, combined with their large size, makes them one of the most distinctive species in ant breeding.

The difficulty of breeding Camponotus cruentatus

Camponotus cruentatus is considered a low-difficulty species to breed, making it a great choice for beginners. Due to its size and beautiful colouring, it is also a popular choice among more experienced ant breeders. Their size and calm temperament make them easy to keep and observe at home.

Breeding instructions

To ensure optimal conditions for Camponotus cruentatus, it is recommended to maintain the formicarium at a temperature of 22-26 degrees Celsius with access to water sources and a variety of food. The diet of these ants should include sweet liquids (e.g. water with honey) and protein (e.g. dead insects). This will provide them with all the necessary nutrients. From our experience of private home breeding, we can also recommend using additional heating for Camponotus cruentatus. This significantly increases the number of eggs laid by the queen.

The first days after purchase

In the first few days after the Camponotus cruentatus colony arrives at your home, it is important to give them peace and quiet so that they can acclimatise to their new environment. Provide the ants with constant access to water and gently introduce food, observing their feeding preferences. Each colony differs slightly in terms of preferences. Some colonies prefer sugar water syrup, while others prefer diluted honey in a 1:2 ratio. So see what your colony chooses, or surprise them with each feeding. They will be grateful!
