Description

Camponotus variegatus – the tropical gem among Camponotus species

Camponotus variegatus is one of the most beautifully coloured ant species, attracting attention at first glance. Their contrasting black and yellow colouring is somewhat reminiscent of a tiger pattern, while perfectly complementing the exotic nature of this species. They originate from Southeast Asia and Oceania, where they inhabit both the treetops and the ground-level nooks and crannies of tropical forests.

Thanks to its charm, dynamic lifestyle and caste system, Camponotus variegatus is an ideal choice for breeders who already have experience with easier species and want to move on to something more impressive – both visually and behaviourally.

What makes Camponotus variegatus unique?

  • Colouring like exotic insects – black and yellow body segments are eye-catching and look phenomenal against the natural background.

  • Visible soldier caste – workers vary in size, allowing for interesting interactions within the colony to be observed.

  • Tropical lifestyle – ants are active all year round, with no need to hibernate.

  • High activity in the arena – they regularly patrol and explore the space, which makes them look great in an exhibition formicarium.

  • Faster growth rate than other Camponotus species – under favourable conditions, the colony can be observed to grow rapidly.

Breeding requirements

Camponotus variegatus is a tropical species – it requires a temperature of 24–28°C and relatively high nest humidity (60–80%). It is worth investing in a well-ventilated acrylic or 3D-printed formicarium with a humidification section and microclimate control.

They look best in an arena with light sand or a dark background with elements of wood, bark or stone that contrast with their colouring. Be careful, though – they can be clever and quick, so a good escape barrier is a must!

Dieta

The diet of Camponotus variegatus consists mainly of:

  • Protein foods: feed insects (cockroaches, flies, crickets)

  • Energy foods: protein-carbohydrate syrups, water with honey

  • Supplementation: vitamin preparations (optional)

Regular protein feeding supports larval development and accelerates colony growth.

Why is it worth having Camponotus variegatus?

Because it is a combination of unusual appearance, interesting activity and tropical character. Their presence in the formicarium attracts attention – not only yours, but also that of every visitor who takes a look at the exhibition. They give a lot of satisfaction, and under the right conditions, they grow like mushrooms.

If you want to breed ants that look like they come from the jungle, Camponotus variegatus are waiting for you!
