Description

Novomessor cockerelli – a swift and unpredictable inhabitant of the desert

Novomessor cockerelli is one of the most underrated species of desert ants. Native to the southwestern United States and Mexico, these unique ants impress with their speed, agility and unusual appearance. Although not recommended as a first species, they are an excellent choice for intermediate and advanced keepers who want something less obvious than classic harvester ants or Messor bestsellers.

This is a species that can surprise you. Not only with its behaviour, but also with its rate of development, varied diet and resistance to harsh conditions.

What makes Novomessor cockerelli stand out?

  • Unique natural environment – they originate from desert and semi-desert regions of the USA (Arizona, New Mexico, California), where extreme temperatures and very low humidity prevail.

  • Excellent adaptation to drought – nests are built deep underground, where it is cool and shady. In captivity, they thrive best in dry formicaria with mineral substrate.

  • Impressive size – the queen can reach up to 16 millimetres in length, and workers – depending on their caste – from 6 to 12 millimetres. They are slender, strong and very fast.

  • Varied diet – these ants are omnivorous, but with an emphasis on seeds, small insects and sweet liquids. Watching them feed is pure pleasure.

  • No classic soldiers – although the workers vary in size, there are no distinct castes as in the case of the Messors or Pogonomyrmexes. Nevertheless, their work organisation and colony dynamics are extremely interesting.

  • Strong mandibles and physical activity – great for observing defensive behaviour, teamwork and food transport.

Breeding conditions

Novomessor cockerelli are typical desert ants – their environment should replicate natural conditions:

  • Temperature: 24–30°C (they can withstand even higher temperatures)

  • Humidity: low – nest 30–50%, arena 20–40%

  • Formicarium: dry, preferably sandy-clay or with a layer of gravel; desert setup formicaria work very well.

Avoid excessive moisture – it is a sure-fire way to cause health problems for the entire colony.

What should you feed Novomessor cockerelli?

  • Seeds: poppy, sesame, flax, grass

  • Protein: mealworms, cockroaches, small flies

  • Sugars: honey water, syrups

This is an excellent opportunity to observe their natural foraging behaviour – they eagerly gather food, carry it back to their nest and shred it.

Why choose Novomessor cockerelli?

  • Because you want to have something unique in your collection that few people have heard of.

  • Because you are fascinated by desert species and enjoy observing natural behaviour.

  • Because you want to experience a dynamic colony that is always doing something

  • Because they are beautiful, fast and full of character – perfect for observation.

What should you watch out for?

  • They are not for everyone – if these are your first ants, it is better to start with Lasius, Messor or Camponotus.

  • Speed – they are incredibly active. Ensure you have good security measures in place.

  • Humidity – it is easy to overwater, which can harm the colony

Novomessor cockerelli are unusual ants that quickly win the hearts of experienced breeders. Their desert nature, impressive size and interesting diet make them an excellent choice for dry breeding, while offering a great deal of enjoyment to observe.

If you are looking for ants that are fast, clever and unlike any other – these are the ones for you.
