Cataglyphis nodus is a very interesting species of ant belonging to the genus Cataglyphis – a group of ants known for their rapid movement, active patrolling of their territory and excellent adaptation to warm, dry environments. In the wild, they are found, amongst other places, in southern Europe, the Balkans, Turkey and parts of the Middle East.

These are ants that certainly know how to attract attention. They’re not the sort of colony that spends the whole day tucked away in its nest. When the temperature is right, the workers are keen to venture out, forage for food and react very quickly to what’s happening around them.

Cataglyphis nodus worker ants have a slender build, long legs and a distinctive, swift manner of movement. Their colouration usually combines a dark head and abdomen with a reddish-brown thorax and legs. They look truly striking against light-coloured sand or natural ground.

Light-coloured sand, gravel or a mineral mix would be a good choice. It is important to ensure good ventilation and stable conditions, without over-watering the nest.

The temperature in the formicarium should be around 25–30°C. It is best to heat only part of the formicarium so that the ants can choose a suitable spot for themselves. The nest should not be completely dry, particularly when there is brood in the colony, but the arena can remain fairly dry.

A constant supply of water is essential.

Feeding Cataglyphis nodus

Cataglyphis nodus should be fed mainly on live insects and a source of sugars. Small mealworms, cockroaches, flies, crickets or other insects suited to the size of the colony work well.

Ant nectar, honey water or sugar water can be provided as a source of sugar. It is best to offer small portions and remove any leftovers regularly, as the food spoils more quickly at higher temperatures.

The first few days after buying a Cataglyphis nodus

Once you have received the colony, it is best to leave the ants in peace for a few days. Place the test tube or small nest in a quiet spot, and provide access to water, a little sugar food and a small insect for them to feed on.

It is not worth moving a small colony straight into a large formicarium. To begin with, a test tube or a small nest with access to a small arena will work best. Only once the colony has grown can you consider a larger module.
