Meranoplus bicolor is a species that immediately catches the eye with its appearance. The workers are small but very distinctive: they have a reddish-brown head and thorax, and a darker abdomen. Added to this is the fine body hair, which makes these ants look slightly different from most of the common species found in home ant farms.

In the wild, Meranoplus bicolor is found in many Asian countries, including India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. It inhabits mainly open grassy areas, forest edges and areas with sparse vegetation. It builds its nests in the ground, often at the base of plants.

Characteristics of Meranoplus bicolor

Meranoplus bicolor are small ants, but very interesting to observe. The workers move rather calmly, explore the arena and readily consume both protein-rich food and sugar sources. In the wild, they forage on the ground and on plants, where they feed on non-floral nectaries and honeydew.

Thanks to the hairs on their bodies, they can also collect tiny particles of substrate, which helps them to camouflage themselves. The difficulty of breeding Meranoplus bicolor

Breeding Meranoplus bicolor is not particularly difficult, but it is worth bearing in mind that these are small ants. The most important thing is to provide them with stable conditions, constant access to water and a well-secured enclosure. With small colonies, it is best to avoid an overly large formicarium, as a small colony feels safer in a smaller space.

This species does not require overwintering, which makes things much easier. It thrives best in warm conditions, at a temperature of around 24–28°C. Humidity should be moderate, with access to a moister part of the nest, but without the chambers becoming waterlogged.

Meranoplus bicolor are omnivorous ants. When keeping them, it is advisable to feed them:

• feed insects, e.g. fruit flies, small cockroaches, mealworms or crickets,
• water with honey or ant nectar,
• constant access to clean water,
• small seeds to add variety to your diet.

Protein is particularly important when the colony is rearing its larvae. Sources of sugar help the workers to stay active and maintain the energy they need to explore the arena.

The first few days after buying a Meranoplus bicolor

Once you have received the colony, it is best to leave the ants in peace for a few days. It is advisable to place the test tube in a quiet spot, away from bright light, vibrations and frequent disturbance. During the first few days, simply ensure they have access to water and a small amount of food in the arena.

There’s no point in rushing to get a larger formicarium. A small colony of Meranoplus bicolor is best started in a test tube or a very small nest with an arena. Only once the number of workers has increased significantly should you consider moving them to a larger set-up.
