Theraphosa apophysis, known as the "pink-legged Goliath", is one of the largest tarantulas in the world – females exceed 22 cm in leg span, and their light pink feet contrast with their dark, velvety body. The species originates from the humid lowlands of the Amazon, which is why it requires thick, constantly slightly moist substrate, high temperatures and efficient ventilation in captivity. With proper care, it delights with its impressive markings and calm, yet confident disposition.

Description

Theraphosa apophysis (known as the Pink-foot Goliath) is an absolute giant among tarantulas: females reach a leg span of 22 cm, and their velvety black body contrasts with the delicate pink “socks” on their feet. The species originates from the Amazonian lowlands of Venezuela, Colombia and northern Brazil, where humidity is constantly high, the temperature is around 26–28 °C and thick layers of loose peat. In a terrarium, it therefore requires deep, moist substrate, regular spraying and very good ventilation. With proper care, it rewards you with its impressive appearance, calm (though confident) character and spectacular moulting, during which you can really see its size.

What distinguishes T. apophysis?

  • The largest with pink feet – only this species has distinctly light pink socks, visible even in adult females.
  • Audible warning device – it can hiss loudly by rubbing the bristles on its legs (stridulation).
  • Deep burrows – in nature, they dig tunnels 40 cm deep; in captivity, they will appreciate 20 cm of substrate and a wide cork tube.
  • Humidity + circulation – likes tropical humidity, but cannot tolerate stagnant water; gravity ventilation will prevent mould.
  • Spectacular moulting – a female measuring over 20 centimetres lying on her back is a spectacle that can last up to several hours.

5 steps to success in breeding Theraphosa apophysis

  1. Terrarium – start with a 3–5 litre plastic box for a baby; for an adult female, prepare a minimum of 40 × 30 × 30 cm with thick substrate and a dark hiding place.
  2. Moist, but not wet – every 2–3 days, sprinkle one part of the substrate, leaving one corner dry; observe where the spider chooses to settle. A bowl of water is also useful.
  3. A rich menu – feed every 6–8 days with a portion adequate for the size of the abdomen; avoid fatty larvae, focus rather on cockroaches, crickets or locusts.
  4. Calm during moulting – you will notice a dull colour and lack of appetite; do not feed, increase humidity by 5% and wait for moulting.
  5. Hygiene – remove food debris with tweezers; change the water frequently, as high temperatures accelerate bacterial growth.

Is Theraphosa apophysis suitable for beginners?

We recommend Teraphosa apophysis to keepers who already have experience with large terrestrial tarantulas and are able to control humidity. If you dream of a truly giant arachnid and have space for a sturdy terrarium, Teraphosa will meet your expectations, becoming the centrepiece of your collection.
