Talkohol – quick-drying anti-escape barrier for ants (talc + IPA)

Talkohol is a practical mixture of talc and isopropanol, mixed as an effective barrier at the edges of arenas and formicaria. Once dry, it forms a thin, matt-white film that most ant species are unable to climb. Available in handy dispenser bottles of 50 ml and 100 ml – ready to use straight out of the box.

Why is it worth it?

• Fast action – dries in approx. 30–120 seconds, depending on temperature and ventilation.

• Highly effective – works on a wide range of species (Camponotus, Messor, Lasius, Tetramorium, Pheidole and others).

• Easy application – precise dispenser.

• Yield – 50 ml is usually several dozen full circles of standard arenas (20–30 cm in diameter).

How to use (step by step)

1. Clean the rim of the arena (IPA/water with liquid), dry thoroughly.

2. Shake the bottle – the talc must be evenly distributed in the alcohol.

3. Apply a thin layer to the inner edge of the waistband (1–2 cm) using a brush, foam applicator or cotton wool.

4. Wait until it evaporates and a dull, white “mist” forms.

5. Test it – let a few workers approach the barrier and observe.

6. Refresh the layer when it becomes dirty, damp or when ants start to “bridge” it (usually every 1–4 weeks).

On what surfaces?

• Ideal: glass, acrylic (PMMA), smooth plastic/metal.

• Not recommended: porous surfaces (wood, cork, raw 3D prints).

• Tip: for acrylic, test on a small area in an inconspicuous place (some tensioned panels may be sensitive to contact with alcohol).

Impact of conditions and guidance

• Moisture/steam reduces effectiveness – avoid condensation on the edge.

• Sugars and fats from feeding dirty the barrier – clean the rim before renewal.

• “Bridging”: industrious species can scatter sand or rubbish – remove debris with tweezers.

• Layer thickness: thin and even is better than thick – it does not crumble and lasts longer.

Safety

• Flammable (contains isopropanol). Use away from fire/sparking devices and in a well-ventilated area.

• For hobby use only – do not swallow, avoid contact with eyes and skin.

• Storage: tightly closed, in a cool and dry place; out of reach of children and animals.

Cleaning and restoration

• Wipe off the old barrier layer with IPA or warm water with a little liquid, dry it, and apply a fresh layer.

• If sediment forms in the bottle, shake it; this is a natural separation of talc.
