Rhytidoponera aspera

In stock

Rhytidoponera aspera is an Australian ant from the Ponerinae subfamily, characterised by a predatory lifestyle and a well-developed stinger. This is a species for more experienced keepers: it prefers warmth and live food, and exhibits advanced ‘Ponerine’ behaviours that differ significantly from those of classic granivorous or nectarivorous species.

  • Species: Rhytidoponera aspera

  • Difficulty: moderate to high (for experienced hikers who are aware of the risk of stings)

  • Soldiers: no standard soldiers; larger female workers fulfilling defensive roles

  • Size: queen approx. 8–10 mm, workers 5–8 mm

  • Colour: dark, ranging from olive-brown to almost black, with a subtle metallic sheen

  • Distribution: Australia, warm regions, often forested and wooded

  • Diet: carnivorous; live insects, insect larvae; supplemented with water mixed with honey or carbohydrate gels

  • Hibernation: no traditional hibernation; active all year round in warm conditions

  • Temperature: ideally 22–26 °C

  • Humidity: 60–80 per cent in the nest, moderately dry and well-ventilated in the enclosure

  • Behaviour: cautious, but can be defensive; they have a painful sting

  • Recommended formicarium: a cork, plaster or 3D-printed nest with a clearly defined damp zone, an arena with a good escape barrier and a minimum of nooks and crannies

Description

Rhytidoponera aspera – a predatory ponerine spider from Australia

Rhytidoponera aspera is an ant for those who want something a bit more “rugged” than the classic Camponotus or Messor species. It belongs to the Ponerinae subfamily, with a well-developed stinger, and is geared towards hunting and live food. In terms of behaviour, it is much closer to a small predator than to a peaceful, grain-loving colony. In return for a little respect and experience, it rewards you with extremely interesting biology and a completely different lifestyle in the formicarium.

Detailed description of Rhytidoponera aspera

In the wild, Rhytidoponera aspera is found in Australia, mainly in warm, often forested and wooded areas. These are both ground-dwelling and subterranean ants, inhabiting the soil, litter, spaces under stones and pieces of decaying wood. Colonies do not usually reach the enormous numbers seen in mass-producing species, but they make up for this:

  • a strong predatory instinct,

  • a well-developed stinger,

  • social behaviour that is clearly different from that of ‘typical’ species.

The queen measures around 8–10 mm, whilst the workers measure 5–8 mm. Their colouring is dark: ranging from olive-brown to almost black, sometimes with a subtle metallic sheen. Their bodies are more robust and ‘Ponery-like’ – less delicate than those of smaller species, and more ‘compact’ and predatory in appearance.

This is a species that does not require hibernation. At temperatures of 22–26 °C, it remains active all year round, with a natural, slight slowdown at lower temperatures. It prefers higher humidity in its nest, but prefers its enclosure to be moderately dry, with good ventilation.

Advantages Rhytidoponera aspera

  • Predatory behaviour – hunting, searching for prey, using the stinger, subduing prey.

  • A different lifestyle to that of “classic” ants – a less dense colony, more individual behaviour, great for observing.

  • No hibernation – you can observe their activity and hunting habits all year round.

  • An interesting appearance – dark, compact, ‘muscular’ ants that look great against a light background.

  • High educational value – ideal if you want to demonstrate the difference between a typical colony and ants from the Ponerinae subfamily.

It’s not a genre ‘for everyone’, but if you’re into something a bit more niche and challenging, it’ll really pay off.

Breeding and safety

When it comes to Rhytidoponera aspera, two words are key: control and respect.

Socket:

  • should maintain a higher humidity level in some of the chambers,

  • Cork, plaster or 3D printing work well,

  • It’s worth ensuring there’s a viewing area, but the tank doesn’t necessarily need to be very shallow – this species prefers a certain amount of depth.

Arena:

  • It should be simple, without a ‘maze’ of decorations, so that you have full control over the ants’ movements,

  • substrate: sand, fine gravel or a mineral mix,

  • It is very important to have an effective escape barrier that is cleaned regularly.

Feeding:

  • The basis is feed insects – cockroaches, crickets, larvae, midges, preferably portioned and steamed,

  • Remove any leftover food after 24 hours so as not to feed the mites,

  • sugars (honey water, gels) as a supplement, not the main source,

  • Water in a drinker fitted with cotton wool or mesh must be available at all times.

Safety:

  • This species has a painful sting, so plan your handling to minimise direct contact,

  • it is advisable to wear gloves or at least use tools (tweezers, pliers),

  • Pay particular attention to the escape barrier and ensure the lids are properly sealed.

Who is Rhytidoponera aspera suitable for?

  • for experienced breeders who have already bred several species,

  • for fans of poneryn and predatory ants,

  • for those who wish to observe hunting, the use of the stinger and working with live prey,

  • Definitely not suitable for young children, and certainly not as their first genre.

If you’re getting bored with the classic, docile species and want to see some real little predators in your formicarium, Rhytidoponera aspera will be a great challenge. Add this species to your basket, plan a safe, well-secured setup with a damp nest and a simple arena. In return, you’ll get a colony that reveals a completely different side to the world of ants – with hunting, stinging and a predatory nature taking centre stage.
