Description

Phormictopus sp. “Dominican Purple” – a Caribbean gem with a metallic sheen

Phormictopus sp. “Dominican Purple” is a fascinating, still unnamed species of tarantula discovered in the mountainous regions of the Dominican Republic. Adult females captivate with their deep plum-purple iridescence visible in side lighting, and their massive bodies and energetic hunting habits quickly make them the star of any collection. The species is terrestrial, native to a region with a warm, humid climate, and prefers deep, slightly moist substrate for burrowing. Thanks to its moderately calm disposition (for a large New World species) and relatively simple requirements, the Dominican Purple is an excellent choice for intermediate breeders looking for an exceptionally colourful giant.

Why choose Dominican Purple?

  • Unique colour and sheen – The deep purple sheen on the legs and carapace makes this species look like a real jewellery exhibit – especially under LED lighting or natural side lighting.
  • Large size without extreme aggression – Although it grows up to 20 cm, most individuals are calm in nature; when handled properly, it rarely displays a defensive attitude beyond combing its hair.
  • Spectacular hunts – Strong chelicerae and decisive leaps at prey make feeding a spectacle and an opportunity to observe the natural behaviour of the predator.
  • Tolerance of conditions – The species tolerates drops in humidity and minor temperature fluctuations, provided it has constant access to fresh water and shelter in deeper substrate.
  • Rarity on the market – As a scientifically uncharacterised Phormictopus from the Dominican Republic, “Purple” is still rarely found in breeding – ideal for collectors looking for something unique.

Practical breeding tips

  • Substrate & hiding place: pour in at least 10 cm of coconut peat; harden one corner so that the spider can start digging. Add a piece of cork bark as an initial hiding place.
  • Humidity: keep the substrate moist in ⅔ of the space and drier in the rest; spray once every 3–4 days, but ensure strong side and top ventilation.
  • Feeding: avoid overfeeding – a substantial cockroach once a week is sufficient for an adult female.
  • Safety: use long tweezers when cleaning; Phormictopus stinging hairs are tiny and irritating – safety goggles are recommended.
  • Moulting: you will notice cloudiness in colour and refusal to eat – increase humidity by 5% and suspend feeding for a week or two after moulting.

Phormictopus sp. “Dominican Purple” is an excellent choice for breeders who want a large, colourful tarantula with relatively simple requirements and a moderate temperament. Provide it with deep, slightly moist substrate, a temperature of around 26 °C and a safe hiding place, and in return you will enjoy years of purple splendour and energetic hunting. Reserve your exotic “purple” beauty today and take your collection to a higher, Caribbean level!
