Description

Phormictopus auratus – a majestic tarantula with Caribbean charm

Phormictopus auratus is a striking species of tarantula with unusual, shimmering colouring, which is gaining popularity among enthusiasts of exotic arachnids. It originates mainly from the Caribbean, where the climate is humid and warm – therefore, when breeding it, conditions similar to those found in the tropics should be provided. It is distinguished by its impressive size and varied colour palette, which is particularly visible in the right light (from golden reflections to darker, metallic shimmering segments). Although Phormictopus auratus looks impressive, it requires some experience on the part of the breeder, mainly due to its large size and potential for defensive behaviour.

Origin and natural environment of Phormictopus auratus

  • Caribbean: Most commonly found in areas with high humidity and stable temperatures.
  • Tropical climate: The temperature range in nature is usually between 24 and 30°C with humidity levels of 70–80%.

In natural conditions, Phormictopus auratus inhabits both areas with lush vegetation and areas with fairly moist soil rich in hiding places. It prefers underground burrows where it can hide from heat and predators.

Appearance and behaviour of Phormictopus auratus

  • Striking colours – Adult specimens range in colour from dark brown to black, with visible golden-metallic reflections on their legs and carapace. Depending on the lighting, they can shimmer in different shades, making them extremely visually appealing.
  • Large size – Phormictopus auratus is classified as one of the larger tarantulas – the leg span of an adult female can reach up to 15–18 cm. This feature makes it a particularly desirable species for breeders looking for specimens of “maximum” size.
  • Disposition – Although most individuals behave quite calmly, they can adopt a defensive posture and raise their front legs when they feel threatened. They can also comb out the stinging hairs from their abdomen, which is a typical defence mechanism for tarantulas from America.
  • Predatory behaviour – It reacts quickly to movement in the terrarium and displays agility and strength when hunting. Hunting for food insects can be spectacular and dynamic.

Breeding conditions

Terrarium dla Phormictopus auratus

  • Type: horizontal container, as this species is not arboreal; however, the height should be sufficient to allow free movement and prevent possible escape.
  • Dimensions: for an adult specimen, a terrarium measuring 30–40 × 30–40 × 30 cm (length × width × height) is recommended.
  • Decor: elements that allow digging are recommended – substrate with a thickness of at least 5–8 cm, as well as hiding places made of pieces of bark or artificial rocks.

Phormictopus auratus – Temperature and humidity

  • Temperature: optimal range 24–28°C. A slight drop at night to approx. 20–22°C is tolerated.
  • Humidity: medium-high, at 70–80%. The substrate should be kept slightly moist, but not wet – ventilation is also important to prevent mould growth.

Substrate for Phormictopus auratus

  • Type: a mixture of coconut peat with coconut fibre, possibly with the addition of leaf mould or specialised terrarium substrates.
  • Thickness: minimum 5–8 cm to allow the spider to dig burrows or hollows, which will reduce its stress and make it feel secure.

Nutrition

  • Food: feed insects (cockroaches, crickets, mealworm larvae, locusts).
  • Feeding frequency: young specimens every 5–7 days, adults every 7–10 days. Overfeeding can lead to obesity and slow down the spider’s movements.
  • Water: a small bowl of water is recommended, although birds mainly obtain moisture from their food and surroundings.

Reproduction Phormictopus auratus

Phormictopus auratus has a fairly standard reproduction process for tarantulas. The female can be aggressive towards the male, so mating should take place under the watchful eye of the breeder. Often, after fertilisation, the female prepares a cocoon in which the eggs develop. After a few weeks, the young may hatch and will require separate containers and appropriate growing conditions.

Why choose Phormictopus auratus?

  1. Impressive appearance: Unique metallic reflections and large dimensions attract attention, making it the star of any collection.
  2. Interesting behaviour: Hunting for prey insects, digging in the ground and defensive posture are just some of the aspects that fascinate arachnid enthusiasts.
  3. Relatively easy to maintain: Provided with the right humidity, temperature and sufficient space, Phormictopus auratus thrives without any major problems.
  4. Educational value: Observing the life cycle, moulting and reproduction is a great lesson in biology and predator behaviour.
  5. Advanced communication: Thanks to its clear defensive and warning reactions, this spider provides insight into the basics of tarantula ethology (the study of their behaviour).

Phormictopus auratus is a wonderful species for lovers of larger tarantulas with a stunning appearance. Although it can be aggressive when defending itself, it is relatively easy to breed if you exercise caution and respect its needs. It requires stable climatic conditions – high humidity and optimal temperature – and in return offers a unique spectacle when hunting or moulting. If you are looking for a majestic arachnid to diversify your collection, Phormictopus auratus will certainly meet your expectations.
