Description

Grammostola rosea – the classic “Chilean Rose” for novice breeders

Grammostola rosea (formerly Grammostola rosea “red form”) is one of the most popular tarantulas in the world, valued for its gentle disposition, modest requirements and beautiful pink-copper sheen on its carapace. The species originates from the semi-arid regions of Chile and southern Peru, where the climate is dry and daily temperature fluctuations are pronounced. In domestic conditions, G. rosea is known for its longevity (females live over 20 years) and calm nature, making it the ideal “first spider” for those starting their adventure with terrarium keeping.

The most important breeding advantages of Grammostola rosea

  • Friendly temperament – G. rosea is known for its gentleness – when handled properly, it does not display aggression, making it a safe choice for beginners.
  • Simple living conditions – This is a desert-steppe species, so it tolerates lower humidity and slight temperature fluctuations – ideal for people without advanced heating equipment or humidifiers.
  • Longevity – Females live for two decades, which guarantees long-term satisfaction from breeding and the opportunity to observe their development and behaviour over many years.
  • Striking colouration – The pinkish-copper carapace and shiny hairs on the abdomen make the spider look elegant, even with its modest base colours.
  • Small terrarium – An adult female feels perfectly at home in a tank with a base measuring just 30 × 20 cm, which makes it easy to arrange and saves space.

Step-by-step breeding tips for Grammostola rosea

Terrarium & substrate

  • Keep the soil fairly dry. Lightly sprinkle one corner once or twice a month to prevent drying out, but do not increase the overall humidity.
  • Add a hiding place (half a coconut, cork bark). G. rosea often sits in open spaces, but the possibility of shelter reduces stress.

Temperature & lighting

  • Room temperature (22–24 °C) is usually sufficient; additional heating is only required in cool rooms.
  • This species does not require additional light – avoid direct sunlight to prevent the terrarium from overheating.

Feeding

  • Feed young ones (sling) small crickets or cockroaches every 5–6 days.
  • Adult females – 2–3 large crickets or cockroaches every 7–10 days.
  • G. rosea is known for periodic fasting lasting up to several months – this is normal, provided that the abdomen does not lose volume.

Moulting

  • Before moulting, the spider refuses food and may burrow into the substrate. Slightly increase the humidity in one corner and do not disturb it until 7 days have passed since moulting.

Cleaning

  • Remove food scraps within 24 hours to prevent mites.
  • Replace the substrate every 12–18 months, or more frequently if mould appears.

Grammostola rosea is the quintessential “beginner’s tarantula”: calm, hardy, with modest humidity and temperature requirements. Its subtle pink sheen and long lifespan quickly make it a favourite among both novices and experienced arachnid enthusiasts. Provide it with dry substrate, stable temperature and moderate feeding, and it will reward you with calm behaviour and many years of fascinating observation.
