Rhytidoponera metallica

In stock
SKU: N/A Categories: ,

Rhytidoponera metallica (the so-called "green-head ant") is an Australian species with a hypnotic, metallic sheen – ranging from green to turquoise and purple. Fast, predatory, and very independent in feeding. In breeding, they delight with their activity and unusual reproductive biology (many colonies function with fertile workers – gamergates). For conscious breeders who want something more "wild" than the classic Camponotus.

  • Species: Rhytidoponera metallica (green-head ant)

  • Difficulty: medium-high (fast, with stingers; require a sealed arena)

  • Soldiers: no distinct soldiers (slight size polymorphism)

  • Size: workers approx. 5–7 mm; reproductive forms similar in size (often ergatoid)

  • Coloration: metallic sheen green-turquoise with occasional purple reflections

  • Distribution: Australia (eucalyptus forests, desert edges, gardens)

  • Feeding: predator and scavenger – feed insects, gels/sugar solutions, honey

  • Hibernation: none (thermophilic species)

  • Temperature: 24–28 °C (20–22 °C at night)

  • Humidity: nest 50–70%, arena rather dry with good ventilation

  • Behavior: fast, territorial; they have a sting – we recommend working with tweezers and a good escape barrier

  • Interesting fact: colonies can reproduce thanks to gamergates (fertile workers), and not just the queen

  • Recommended formicarium: 3D print or cork nest with a dry arena, plus a solid "talkohol" barrier

Description

Rhytidoponera metallica – the “green-head ant” with a hypnotic, metallic sheen

Rhytidoponera metallica is an Australian predator with a real “wow effect”: its body shimmers with green, turquoise, and purple, and its movements are fast, springy, and confident. These are ants for breeders looking for something wilder than the classic Camponotus – with interesting biology (gamergates), active hunting and a distinctive character. In a well-designed formicarium, they can be extremely spectacular and self-sufficient.

What makes them special (and why they are worth it)

  • Their metallic sheen can be seen from afar – against the light background of the arena, they look like mini jewelry.

  • Predatory temperament: they hunt live insects, effectively cleaning the arena of debris.

  • Gamergates – in many colonies in nature, the role of reproduction is taken over by fertile workers, so the colony can function without a “classic” queen.

  • Resilience and flexibility – they tolerate the fairly dry conditions of the arena, as long as the nest has stable humidity.

  • Non-stop action – quick reconnaissance, immediate response to food, great for observing hunting behavior.

Breeding conditions – simple and effective

Formicarium: 3D print or cork with a humidification chamber, airtight arena and secured with talc alcohol

Arena substrate: sand with fine gravel or a smooth plate with decorations (stone, bark).

Ventilation: solid – reduces condensation and mites.

Maintenance: remove protein residues within 24 hours to avoid feeding mites.

Diet and feeding

  • Protein (basic): small cockroaches, flies, chopped mealworm larvae, crickets. They prefer fresh live food – enjoy watching them hunt!

  • Carbohydrates: water with honey/commercial carbohydrate gels in small portions (2–3 times a week).

  • Water: constant access (water dispenser with cotton wool/mesh to prevent them from drowning).

Tip: they are “cleaners” – they eagerly eat dead insects; add small portions frequently.

Safety and handling

  • They have a sting – the sting is clearly felt. Clean the arena only with tweezers.

  • Escape barrier mandatory – ants are fast and agile.

  • Avoid contact with skin/eyes; if you are prone to allergies, exercise particular caution.

Who is it for?

  • For people who have already had experience with ants and want something wilder and more predatory.

  • For fans of behavioral biology (gamergates, hunting, territoriality).

  • For those who appreciate premium aesthetics – the metallic sheen is unique.

Rhytidoponera metallica is not just about color and speed. These small, agile predators have a unique breeding strategy and character that will give your formicarium a completely different vibe. If you are looking for ants that make things happen, this is the choice for you. Add them to your cart and see their metallic sparkle in action.
