Psalmopoeus cambridgei, known as the "Trinidad Chevron", is a fast, arboreal tarantula with olive-green colouring and a distinctive black pattern on its abdomen. It originates from the humid forests of Trinidad, where it builds spidery tunnels high among the branches – therefore, in captivity, it requires a vertical terrarium, high humidity and good ventilation. Although it does not have stinging hairs, it defends itself with a lightning-fast escape and an impressive threatening posture, which is why it is recommended for intermediate breeders looking for a dynamic, impressive species.

Description

Psalmopoeus cambridgei – “Trinidad Chevron” for fans of fast, arboreal tarantulas

Psalmopoeus cambridgei, commonly known as the Trinidad Chevron Tarantula, is a striking arboreal species, prized for its intense olive-green colouring, distinct herringbone patterns on its abdomen and lightning-fast movements. It originates from the humid tropical forests of the island of Trinidad, where high temperatures and high humidity prevail. Unlike many New World species, it does not have urticating hairs – its main form of defence is speed and an impressive threatening posture. Thanks to its strong instinct to build spidery nesting tunnels high in the tree canopy, P. cambridgei is a fascinating subject for intermediate and advanced breeders to observe.

Why choose Psalmopoeus cambridgei?

  • Striking colour and pattern – The combination of olive green with a black chevron pattern on the abdomen makes this species stand out from other arboreal species.
  • No stinging hairs – Instead of irritating defensive setae, it uses speed and a threatening posture – less risk of skin irritation for the breeder.
  • Dynamic behaviour – Lightning-fast hunts in the terrarium are extremely spectacular, and the expansion of spider tunnels high up among the branches provides constant viewing attractions.
  • Rapid growth – With the right diet, juveniles reach sub-adult size in less than two years, allowing the breeder to quickly enjoy a fully coloured adult specimen.
  • Compact but tall terrarium – The 30 × 30 cm base plus 45 cm height allows you to comfortably keep an adult female, saving space in your collection.

Breeding tips for Psalmopoeus cambridgei

Terrarium & decor

  • Place vertical cork tubes or thick branches – spiders will happily spin their webs around them, creating a hiding place.
  • Leave some space under the ceiling, as P. cambridgei often patrols the upper parts of the tank.

Humidity & ventilation

  • Maintain 70–80 per cent humidity, but never without air movement.
  • Spray every 2–3 days; one wall should remain drier so that the spider can choose its microclimate.

Temperatura

  • The room temperature of 24 °C can be increased using heating cables on the side or rear wall. Avoid heating from below to prevent the substrate from drying out.

Feeding

  • Young (L2–L4): 2 × weekly small crickets.
  • Juveniles: every 6 days, Turkish cockroaches or locusts.
  • Adults: 1–2 large cockroaches every 7–9 days. Avoid giving them too large portions so as not to make them fat.

Service

  • Use long tweezers and a catch cup for all tasks. This species can jump several centimetres and climb smooth surfaces very quickly.

Psalmopoeus cambridgei is an ideal choice for breeders who already have experience with smaller arboreal species and want a spectacular, fast-moving bird spider in a tropical terrarium. Its olive green colour, distinctive chevron pattern and dynamic hunting behaviour make every observation exciting. Provide it with a tall, well-ventilated terrarium and maintain humid but not stuffy conditions, and the Trinidad Chevron will reward you with its spectacular appearance and fascinating behaviour.
