Description

Pamphobeteus sp. “Machala” – a large, voracious tarantula with a wow factor

Pamphobeteus sp. “Machala” is a tarantula that looks like a “heavyweight” in any collection. Large, robust, fast-growing and visually striking. This species can rapidly transform a small spider into a true giant, and shows its character when feeding: quick reactions, a confident attack on its prey and considerable strength. At the same time, it is a tarantula that can be nervous and defensive, which is why it is best suited to intermediate and advanced keepers.

Detailed description of the species

Pamphobeteus sp. “Machala” originates from South America, most commonly associated with the region of Ecuador. It leads a typically terrestrial lifestyle, often using hiding places under bark or in depressions in the ground, and is also capable of lightly digging and stabilising its shelter.

This is a tarantula from the New World, so it has stinging hairs which it can use when stressed. In practice, this means that if handled incorrectly, if the terrarium is opened too quickly, or if you try to push the spider, it may “shoot” its hairs, and these are quite noticeable in large Pamphobeteus specimens. This is definitely a species to observe, not to handle.

Adult females reach a leg span of approximately 18–22 cm. Their colouration is dark, with purple-burgundy, and sometimes copper-coloured, accents on the carapace and legs. Even if the differences between individuals are subtle in photographs, in good light and in the flesh it can look truly “premium”. Its massive build makes it a spider whose presence is felt in the terrarium.

This species grows relatively quickly for a large tarantula, and with regular feeding, it moult successfully. This is one of the reasons why it is so popular – it shows rapid ‘progress’ and gives a sense of the collection’s growth.

Advantages of Pamphobeteus sp. “Machala”

  • Large size and imposing build

It’s a tarantula that’s impressive, and not just in photos.

  • Rapid growth

Under the right conditions, you can see real progress in a short space of time.

  • Voracious appetite and strong reactions during feeding

Perfect for those who enjoy watching hunting and swift attacks on the feeding station.

  • Striking colouring

A dark base with purple and burgundy accents looks great in a terrarium with a natural design.

  • A collector’s item

If you’re looking for a ‘spider with character’ rather than just a quiet classic, this is a very good choice.

Breeding conditions in practice

Terrarium:

  • it’s more important to look ‘horizontally’ than ‘vertically’, because it’s a ground-dwelling tarantula,

  • the minimum size for an adult female is approximately 30x40x30 cm,

  • A stable hiding place is essential: a piece of bark, a tunnel, a half-coconut, or something the spider can burrow into and rearrange to suit itself.

Substrate:

  • A layer of 10–15 cm allows the hide to be dug in and positioned securely,

  • the soil should retain moisture deep down, but the surface can be drier,

  • avoid mud and condensation on the windows – in high humidity, ventilation is crucial.

Humidity and ventilation:

  • Aim for 70–80 per cent, but always ensure good air circulation,

  • a bowl of water should always be available,

  • Lightly misting one part of the terrarium is better than splashing water all over the surface.

Feeding:

  • a voracious species, but don’t force-feed it,

  • Young birds tend to feed more often from smaller feeders, whilst adults tend to feed less frequently from larger ones,

  • Choose food that is suitable for the size of the spider,

  • Before moulting, reduce the amount of food you give the spider and remove any large live prey from the terrarium so as not to stress it.

Who is Pamphobeteus sp. “Machala” for?

  • for breeders who already have the basics and want to take their skills to the next level,

  • for those who like large tarantulas that grow quickly and have a hearty appetite,

  • for those who are looking for a film simply to watch and have no intention of tampering with the spider.

If you’re looking for a tarantula that grows quickly, has a voracious appetite and simply impresses with its size and build, Pamphobeteus sp. “Machala” is an excellent choice. Add it to your basket, prepare a sturdy terrarium with a thick substrate and good ventilation, and in return you’ll get a robust South American giant that will look like a top-of-the-range specimen in your collection.
