Description

Cyriocosmus elegans – a dwarf tarantula that looks like a piece of jewellery

Cyriocosmus elegans is one of those species that proves size really doesn’t matter. It’s tiny, but visually it can make a bigger impression than many a giant. Contrasting patterns, elegant markings on the abdomen and a compact build make this tarantula look like a living ornament. It is an excellent choice for those who want a small species with a big impact, to observe on a desk, in a display case or as a gem in a collection of mini tarantulas.

Detailed description of the species

Cyriocosmus elegans is native to the tropical regions of northern South America. It is a ground-dwelling species that stays close to the ground. In the wild, it makes use of micro-shelters in leaf litter, under pieces of wood and in depressions in the ground. In a terrarium, it behaves similarly: it readily hides in a shelter, spins a delicate web and often ‘lies in wait’ at the entrance to its shelter.

Adults reach a leg span of around 5–6 cm, so this is a typical dwarf tarantula. This has a huge advantage: you don’t need a large terrarium, yet you can observe natural behaviour in a small space. On the other hand, this size requires caution: the spider is fast, agile and easy to lose sight of if you’re cleaning the tank in a hurry.

Its temperament is usually skittish and quick. This species is not particularly prone to “conflict” and would rather flee to a hiding place than attack. As a New World species, it may have stinging hairs, but given its small size, you are far more likely to see it flee than to see it act aggressively.

The biggest attraction is, of course, the markings. C. elegans is considered one of the most striking dwarf tarantulas, which is why it is so often chosen by people who like “pretty spiders” and want something unique, but not necessarily large.

Advantages of Cyriocosmus elegans

  • Stunning design

This is one of the most strikingly patterned mini tarantulas, with contrasting markings that are clearly visible even without a macro lens.

  • Compact size, user-friendly design

It doesn’t require a large terrarium, and the conditions are easy to maintain.

  • Great for watching

If the hiding place and décor are well chosen, he can often be seen at the entrance to the shelter.

  • Perfect for a small collection

If you’re putting together a collection of ‘mini tarantulas’, this species is an absolute must-have.

Breeding conditions in practice

Terrarium:

  • Small containers work really well, but they need to be well ventilated,

  • provide a hiding place: a piece of bark, a leaf, a small tunnel, a small piece of coconut shell,

  • It’s worth adding some decorative touches, but don’t go overboard with the number of nooks and crannies, as a small spider can disappear in the blink of an eye when you’re setting the table.

Substrate:

  • 3–6 cm of coconut peat or unfertilised soil,

  • slightly moist on the inside, drier on the outside,

  • Don’t make a mess, because with a small tank it’s easy for it to get stuffy.

Humidity and ventilation:

  • Aim for 70–80 per cent, but always ensure there is airflow,

  • moisten a section of the substrate, rather than the whole terrarium at once,

  • The mini-sized water bowl is a plus, but in small containers, spot watering is often sufficient.

Feeding:

  • serve small portions of food appropriate to the size,

  • Feed younger individuals smaller portions more frequently, and adults less frequently,

  • Remove any leftovers if the spider doesn’t eat them within a reasonable time, so as not to encourage mould and dust mites.

Who is Cyriocosmus elegans for?

  • for those who want a small, beautiful tarantula,

  • for breeders building a collection of mini tarantulas,

  • for those who enjoy watching spiders, but don’t necessarily want to handle them with their bare hands,

  • also suitable for beginners, provided they are patient and careful when servicing it.

If you’re looking for a tarantula that looks like a tiny, living ornament and can dazzle with its markings despite its compact size, Cyriocosmus elegans is the perfect choice. Add it to your basket, prepare a small terrarium with a hiding place and slightly moist substrate, and in return you’ll get a miniature species that makes a huge impression in the flesh.
