  • Size: queen approx. 7–9 millimetres, workers 3–6 millimetres

  • Colouring: amber-brown, darker heart-shaped abdomen

  • Distribution: Asia (tropics and subtropics)

  • Lifestyle: arboreal, in wood, capable of building 'cardboard' structures from fibres

  • Temperature: 24–28 °C (at night 21–23 °C)

  • Humidity: nest 60–75%, arena moderately dry with good ventilation

  • Hibernation: none (tropical populations)

  • Nutrition: water with honey/carbohydrate gels + insect protein 2–3 times a week.

Description

Crematogaster biroi – “acrobatic ants” that put on a show on vertical walls

Crematogaster biroi are agile, tree-dwelling ants known for their heart-shaped abdomens and spectacular climbing skills. In a warm, well-ventilated cork or wooden formicarium, they create a lively spectacle: fast patrols, rapid recruitment for food and constant “grooming parties” in the nest chambers. Ideal for those who want to watch the colony in action – not just behind the scenes of life in the nest.

Detailed description of Crematogaster biroi

Crematogaster biroi originates from the tropical and subtropical climates of Asia. In nature, it inhabits cracks in bark, hollow twigs and spaces under tree bark. In captivity, a vertical formicarium with a cork or wooden insert works best. Ants prefer a temperature of 24–28 °C and a more humid nest (60–75%) with a rather dry, airy arena. They do not require hibernation – they are a year-round, dynamic species.

In the “acrobatics” arena, they primarily search for sugars: water with honey, carbohydrate gels, nectars in small containers. At the same time, they need protein for their larvae – small feed insects (cockroaches, flies, crickets in pieces) fed 2–3 times a week. The colony quickly builds intense pheromone trails and recruits dozens of workers to the new food source, which is clearly visible through the glass.

Practical note: they are sprinters and excellent climbers – an anti-escape barrier (talkohol) and well-fitted joints are essential. Small, light debris can be used to “bridge” edges; regular cleaning of the arena makes such tricks difficult for them.

Why choose Crematogaster biroi

  • Tree show – climbing, swift patrols, spectacular recruitment for food.

  • Impressive posture – heart-shaped abdomen raised above the torso (characteristic “acrobat’s pose”).

  • Colonies “with character” – lively, active, eager to use vertical spaces.

  • Simple feeding – sugars constantly or every 1–2 days, protein portioned 2–3 times a week.

  • No hibernation – year-round observation, no interruptions in development.

Characteristics – Crematogaster biroi

  • Lifestyle: arboreal; thrives in cork/wood, capable of merging fibres into ‘cardboard’ structures.

  • Behaviour: fast, well-organised; clear recruitment, intensive grooming in the nest.

  • Microclimate: nest 60–75% humidity with constant ventilation; arena drier, without condensation.

  • Diet: sugars (honey/gels) + insect protein; small, frequent portions reduce the risk of mites.

  • Safety: great climbing – mandatory anti-escape barrier and clean edge of the arena.

  • Appearance: amber-brown body, darker, heart-shaped abdomen – they look beautiful against a light background.

Are you looking for a colony that really lives in plain sight and uses every inch of vertical space? Go for Crematogaster biroi. Add it to your basket, choose a cork nest and a sturdy barrier – and in just a few days you will see your formicarium turn into a bustling tree-dwelling town.
