Camponotus intrepidus

In stock

Camponotus intrepidus is a striking, large Camponotus species with distinctive soldiers, native to the warmer regions of Australia. Its dark body with lighter, rust-coloured legs, stable development and lack of hibernation make it ideal for a display formicarium for intermediate-level keepers.

  • Species: Camponotus intrepidus

  • Difficulty: medium

  • Soldiers: yes (clear polymorphism)

  • Size: queen 17–20 mm, workers 6–13 mm

  • Colouration: dark, almost black body with rust-brown legs and parts of the torso

  • Distribution: Australia, warm, sunny areas

  • Diet: water with honey or carbohydrate gels + insect food (cockroaches, crickets, larvae)

  • Hibernation: no traditional hibernation; active all year round in warm conditions

  • Temperature: 24–28 °C (may drop to 20–22 °C at night)

  • Humidity: 50–70 per cent in the nest; the enclosure should be fairly dry and well-ventilated

  • Recommended formicarium: cork or 3D-printed with a humidification chamber, a larger arena with an anti-escape barrier (e.g. MK II)

Description

Camponotus intrepidus – an Australian giant for a showcase formicarium

Camponotus intrepidus is a large, striking species from Australia that makes an excellent centrepiece for any collection. With its massive queen, distinct soldiers and striking colouration, it is hard to pass this colony by without noticing it. It prefers warmth, a well-designed nest and a larger arena, and under the right conditions, it rewards you with calm, stable growth without the need for hibernation.

Detailed description of Camponotus intrepidus

In the wild, Camponotus intrepidus inhabits the warm, sunny regions of Australia. It builds its nests in the soil, under stones or in wood, often in dry locations, though it may find slightly moister areas deeper underground. In captivity, this translates to the classic setup for thermophilic Camponotus species:

  • a warm environment within the range of 24–28 °C,

  • a noticeably drier, well-ventilated arena,

  • localised humidification of parts of the chambers, rather than the entire structure.

The queen measures approximately 17–20 mm, whilst the workers measure 6–13 mm, with distinct caste polymorphism. The smaller workers are responsible for cleaning, caring for the brood and scouting, whilst the larger majors act as soldiers and provide the ‘heavy machinery’ for protein breakdown. The colouration is highly contrasting: a dark, almost black body combined with rusty-brown legs and parts of the thorax gives the colony a very elegant, “serious” appearance.

In the arena, C. intrepidus are not frantic, but neither are they “asleep” – when food is provided, a distinct pheromone trail quickly appears, along with a group of workers who secure and portion out the food.

Advantages of Camponotus intrepidus

  • A large, conspicuous species – ideal for viewing from a distance, as well as for photography and videography.

  • Distinct worker ants – the caste polymorphism is visible to the naked eye, which makes quite an impression, especially on those less familiar with ants.

  • Contrasting colouring – its dark body and lighter legs look great against the arena’s light-coloured surface.

  • No hibernation – as a thermophilic species, it does not require winter shelter, so you can enjoy watching the colony all year round.

  • Stable growth – it grows steadily, but its population does not ‘explode’ as rapidly as that of some smaller species.

How to run a summer camp in practice

Socket – it is best to choose from:

  • materials that retain moisture well locally (cork, 3D-printed panels with an insert, Ytong, plaster),

  • the option to moisten only part of the nest,

  • compartments of varying sizes, so that the larger worker bees have room to move about.

The ants themselves will decide which parts of the nest are to serve as a ‘nursery’ for the larvae and which as a food store.

Arena:

  • dry, with a sandy, mineral substrate, featuring a few stones or bark as decoration,

  • A proper escape barrier is essential, as there will be plenty of patrols if the colony grows larger,

  • the larger the arena, the more natural the foraging patterns and behaviour appear.

Feeding:

  • carbohydrates: water with honey, carbohydrate gels, special liquid foods for ants; best served in small containers so as not to flood the barrier,

  • protein: 2–3 times a week, portions of cockroaches, crickets, larvae or flies; leftovers removed after 24 hours,

  • fresh water is always available in a drinking bowl lined with cotton wool or mesh.

Who is Camponotus intrepidus suitable for?

  • for those who already have some basic experience of keeping ants and wish to move on to a larger, more impressive species,

  • for beekeepers who prefer distinctive soldier bees and large worker bees,

  • for those who want something in their collection that immediately impresses their guests.

If you’re looking for ants that look ‘impressive’, with a large queen, soldiers and striking, contrasting colouration, Camponotus intrepidus is an excellent choice. Add the species to your basket, choose a decent formicarium with a larger arena, and stock up on honey and insect food. In return, you’ll get a colony that will calmly but steadily transform your formicarium into an elegant Australian scene, with large Camponotus taking centre stage.
