Description

Aphaenogaster longiceps – fast sprinters from the Australian steppes

Aphaenogaster longiceps are slender, long-legged ants that love movement, trails and large enclosures. They combine the characteristics of seed-gatherers with those of protein-hunters, so there’s always something happening in the enclosure: patrolling, scouting, recruitment, transport. This is a great species for those looking for a dynamic, ‘outdoor’ colony without hibernation, with highly entertaining behaviour.

Detailed description of Aphaenogaster longiceps

In the wild, Aphaenogaster longiceps inhabits the warm, dry and semi-arid regions of Australia. They are typical ground-dwelling ants: they build nests in the ground, often with several entrances, and extend their foraging trails over a wide area in search of food. In captivity, this translates into clear preferences:

  • they prefer a larger arena where they can mark out routes,

  • prefer warmth in the range of 24–28 °C,

  • They thrive in a moderately damp nest and a fairly dry, well-ventilated enclosure.

The queen measures around 9–11 mm, whilst the workers measure 4–7 mm. They are slender, with longer legs, which gives them a distinctive, delicate appearance. Their colouring is usually a range of brownish-red shades with a darker abdomen, which stands out beautifully against a sandy background.

In the arena, Aphaenogaster longiceps move quickly and confidently, often creating distinct trails leading to their food. They are highly efficient at gathering both protein and seeds, and their ‘logistical’ behaviour is ideal for observation and recording.

Advantages Aphaenogaster longiceps

  • A dynamic, visible colony – plenty of activity in the arena, with clearly defined patrols and trails.

  • A slender build and long legs – ants look light and “sprint-like”; they look great on the sand.

  • No hibernation – a thermophilic species, active all year round when kept indoors.

  • A varied diet – it readily eats both seeds and insects, which offers plenty of feeding options.

  • The “ground-dwelling” effect – ideal if you like species that are active on the ground rather than just staying in their nests.

Breeding and feeding in practice

The nest for Aphaenogaster longiceps does not need to be very tall, but it should have:

  • rather narrower corridors and chambers,

  • the option of localised humidification (not the entire socket block is flooded with water),

  • good ventilation to avoid a stuffy, overly humid environment.

The Arena is their natural “stage”:

  • preferably sandy or sandy-gravelly,

  • with a few stones, a piece of bark, perhaps a short root,

  • the larger it is, the more you’ll see their natural behaviour in the wild.

Feeding:

  • sugars: honey water, carbohydrate gels, special mixes – these can be available almost constantly and replaced regularly,

  • protein: feed pieces of insects (cockroaches, crickets, flies, larvae) 2–3 times a week,

  • seeds: small seeds as a supplement, which they will carry to the nest and store,

  • Water: a drinking bowl lined with cotton wool or mesh, available at all times.

It is always a good idea to remove any leftover protein within 24 hours at the latest, so as not to attract dust mites or spoil the microclimate.

Who is Aphaenogaster longiceps suitable for?

  • for those who prefer fast, nimble ants rather than massive giants,

  • for breeders who want more action in the arena than in the nest,

  • for those who’ve already got the basics down and are looking for a model with a distinct off-road character, but without extreme demands.

If you’re looking for a colony that will really make the most of a large enclosure, efficiently gather protein and seeds, and doesn’t require hibernation, Aphaenogaster longiceps is an excellent choice. Add this species to your basket, plan for a larger arena and prepare a mixed food pack. In return, you’ll get slender sprinters from Australia that will turn your formicarium into a lively, bustling slice of the steppe.
