You may be wondering how to choose a tarantula for beginners. Many people fall in love with these unique creatures so much that they decide to set up their first terrarium and start breeding them at home. In our store, you will find spider species that are perfect for beginners – soon your first tarantula may move into its new home!

Why are tarantulas a good choice for a beginner breeder?

If you are interested in breeding spiders at home, tarantulas are the best choice for beginners. This is due to several characteristics of these arachnids:

  • They have minimal requirements in terms of living space – they do not need much room or complex, expensive “decorative” elements in their terrarium.
  • are resilient and tolerant of minor mistakes made by novice breeders – for example, when it comes to feeding frequency or ensuring appropriate temperature and humidity conditions,
  • They are not picky eaters, and food for tarantulas is readily available.
  • Selected species of tarantulas do not display excessive aggression, which makes them easier to care for.

A well-chosen tarantula as your first spider may turn out to be the perfect pet for adults, teenagers, and children alike—provided, of course, that it is supervised by a guardian.

No matter how “easy” it is to breed tarantulas, basic safety rules must not be forgotten. Despite their apparent gentleness, they are still venomous predators that should always be kept in their terrarium. In addition to providing them with suitable conditions, you must therefore ensure that they cannot leave their enclosure on their own, and you should avoid picking them up.

Tarantulas – the largest spiders in the world!

Tarantulas are the largest spiders in the world, living mainly in southern (warm and humid) areas. They occur naturally in South America, Asia, and Africa, and even in Europe – they can be found in Portugal, for example. They can live in various environments, inhabiting the upper parts of trees (tree tarantulas) or building their nests on the ground (ground tarantulas).

However, these enormous creatures are difficult to find in their natural habitat. Despite their size, they are spiders that avoid danger, including humans. They thrive in captivity, where they can delight their keepers for many years (female tarantulas can live up to 20 years or more).

Which tarantula to start with—tree-dwelling or ground-dwelling?

When looking for your first tarantula as a beginner, you can choose a ground-dwelling species, which has a gentler nature and a calmer lifestyle, or a tree-dwelling spider, which will be more active and therefore more interesting to observe for many people. Check out which species we particularly recommend for those taking their first steps in tarantula breeding!

Ground-dwelling tarantulas

When choosing your first spider, it is worth considering terrestrial tarantulas, which are known for their relatively gentle temperament. These are large arachnids that are easy to care for. It is a good idea to provide them with a place to hide in their terrarium, such as a burrow or a rock under which they can hide when resting. One of the popular species of ground-dwelling tarantulas that you will find in our offer is Acanthoscurria geniculata, a beautiful and massive spider native to Brazil, also known as the white-knee tarantula.

Among the spiders recommended for beginners is Pamphobeteus fortis, which is distinguished by its weak venom (note, however, that it can comb out stinging hairs!) and low aggression. It is also one of the rarest species bred in captivity!

In our opinion, one of the most interesting ground-dwelling tarantulas, suitable for those taking their first steps in breeding, is Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens, or the Green Bottle Blue Tarantula. It is simply a beautiful tarantula, whose navy blue legs look stunning.

Tree-dwelling tarantulas

A tree spider is a good choice for beginners if you want to observe the spider’s behavior. Species from this line are active spiders, often with spectacular coloring. However, it is important to remember that their terrariums must be constructed and equipped in such a way as to allow them to live in conditions similar to their natural habitat (the enclosure for such a spider should be taller and supplemented with vertical elements that allow it to climb and build a web).

One of the most beautiful tree-dwelling tarantulas is Caribena versicolor (the multicolored tarantula). The abdomen and legs of this spider shimmer with various shades of green and blue, even with a metallic sheen. This tarantula is also non-aggressive, and its venom is weak – it should not pose a threat to a healthy person.

Psalmopoeus irminia, on the other hand, is a spider (Venezuelan bird spider) with dynamic behavior but weak venom. However, it is agile, so if you decide to keep it as your first spider, you should be careful and prepared for such situations.

How to choose your first tarantula?

What else, apart from the spider’s lifestyle, temperament, and venomousness, should you consider before buying your first tarantula? The sex and size of your new pet are also important factors.

Females are significantly larger than males and live longer than them (males, depending on the species, live up to 2-3 years, females from a dozen or so to twenty).

Our online store offers spiders that have already molted several times (from L3 upwards) or are classified according to their body length (BL). In each species’ description, you can select the age/size of tarantula you are interested in.

At mrowson.pl, we offer our customers not only an interesting selection of spiders, but also all the necessary items to start your first breeding project. We offer a selection of terrariums for ground-dwelling and tree-dwelling tarantulas. We also supply feed insects (cockroaches and crickets), substrate (coconut peat), and accessories (tweezers).

Frequently asked questions about tarantulas for beginners

Are tarantulas for beginners poisonous?

Yes – however, depending on the species, their venom is weak or moderate and does not pose a threat to a healthy person. In addition, tarantulas rarely attack beginners.

Is it better to choose a ground-dwelling or tree-dwelling tarantula to start with?

Ground spiders are slower and lead a more “sedentary” lifestyle. Tree spiders are more active and may require more attention and knowledge at first.

What conditions must be provided for a tarantula?

The environment of the bird spider should be humid and warm. It is therefore necessary to spray the substrate and ensure the right temperature (between 22 and 30 degrees Celsius during the day and a minimum of 18 degrees at night).

Which species are recommended for beginners?

To start with, you can choose Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens, which is extremely attractive and does not have high requirements. Caribena versicolor, with its stunning colors, will also be very expressive and encourage daily observation!

Are tarantulas dangerous to children?

Even the mildest tarantula, with weak venom, can be dangerous to a child – that is why you should always supervise the breeding of spiders by younger spider enthusiasts.

What does feeding a tarantula look like?

Despite their name, bird spiders fortunately do not eat birds. It is enough to feed them insects 1-2 times a week (one at a time), placing them in the terrarium (preferably using tweezers, without having to open the container wide). The older the spider, the less often it should be fed (adults are often fed once a month).

How much does it cost to keep a tarantula?

The most expensive part is always the purchase of the tarantula itself and the terrarium, but the subsequent cost of keeping the spider is minimal – all you need to do is provide food, which can cost up to a dozen or so zlotys per month.
