Description

Madagascar hissing cockroach – live, large and nutritious food for tarantulas large ant colonies

Gromphadorhina portentosa, commonly known as the Madagascar hissing cockroach, is one of the largest and most interesting feed insects available for breeding. Native to Madagascar, it grows up to 7–8 cm in length and is characterised by a thick, hard shell and a distinctive “hiss” – although this sound occurs mainly in stressful conditions and is not a problem when feeding.

It is a calm, slow-moving insect that is easy to handle, making it ideal as food for larger tarantulas, snakes, geckos, agamas and many other exotic predators.

Why is it worth it?

  • Extra large size – ideal for adult tarantulas, ant colonies and larger reptiles.

  • Quiet operation and no unpleasant odour – compared to crickets or Turkish cockroaches.

  • Easy to handle – does not jump, does not run away suddenly, moves slowly.

  • Longevity – can live for many months in suitable conditions.

  • A natural source of protein and chitin – supports the healthy development of your animals.

What do you get?

  • 1, 5 or 10 pieces of live cockroaches in the subimago or imago stage.

  • Size of each individual: from 5 cm upwards.

  • Insects are packed securely, with appropriate padding to ensure their comfort during transport.

How should cockroaches be stored?

Madagascar hissing cockroaches are easy to keep:

  • Store them in a ventilated container with paper towels or coconut peat.

  • Room temperature (22–26°C) is sufficient.

  • Feed them vegetables (e.g. carrots, cucumbers, apples) and dry rodent food.

  • Provide moisture in the form of fresh vegetables.

Comments:

  • Cockroaches are not aggressive and do not bite – they are also safe to feed by hand or with tweezers.

  • Large cockroaches are unable to climb smooth surfaces, which makes them easier to handle, but baby cockroaches are excellent climbers.

  • Due to their size and resilience, they can be bred as a source of food – they reproduce quickly in warmer conditions.

For which animals?

The Madagascar hissing cockroach is an excellent choice for:

  • bird spiders with a DC greater than 6 cm,

  • large ant colonies, such as Carebara diversa, Camponotus nicobarensis, or other colonies that consume large amounts of protein.

Add them to your feed mix – your animals will appreciate not only their size but also their nutritional value.

Madagascar cockroach – a natural, peaceful and nutritious choice.
