Polyrhachis hookeri is an exotic, arboreal species with a striking appearance and a very distinctive silhouette – ants of the genus Polyrhachis can look like little ‘armoured’ warriors. The colony is fascinating to observe, as it prefers a vertical lifestyle, readily uses hiding places and often constructs structures using materials found in the nest. This is an ideal choice for those seeking something different from the classic Camponotus species.

  • Difficulty: medium

  • Units: no standard units (colony-dependent polymorphism)

  • Size: queen approx. 6–7 mm, workers approx. 3–5 mm

  • Colour: dark, metallic or matte black; distinctive ‘armoured’ silhouette

  • Lifestyle: arboreal, prefers vertical surfaces and hiding places, often uses materials for building

Description

Polyrhachis hookeri – tree-dwelling ‘armoured’ ants for those looking for something special

Polyrhachis hookeri is a species that makes quite an impression just by its appearance. Ants of the genus Polyrhachis are often associated with small, armoured warriors – they have a distinctive silhouette, dark colouring and a ‘technical’ appearance that stands out sharply from classic, smooth-bodied species. Added to this is their vertical lifestyle: climbing, hiding in shelters, making use of the nest’s structure, and often displaying very interesting behaviour within the nest. If you’re looking for ants other than Camponotus and have a taste for the exotic, this is an excellent choice.

Detailed description of the species

Polyrhachis hookeri originates from Australia and is a tree-dwelling species, which in practice means it thrives best in setups featuring vertical surfaces, climbing structures and hiding places that resemble natural crevices in bark, branches and wood. When keeping them, it is worth thinking of them more as ‘vertical’ ants rather than a species that will sit on flat sand.

Colonies can be fascinating to observe because, unlike many typically ground-dwelling species, a lot of activity takes place at height: transporting food, moving around the décor, clinging to surfaces, and using hiding places. In a well-set-up terrarium, these ants look truly exotic.

As is usually the case with many tree-dwelling species, carbohydrates (honey, jellies, nectars) and protein in the form of insect food are key components of their diet. With regular feeding and stable conditions, they can perform well in the arena, but it is important to remember that arboreal ants often prefer a sense of security and will not always remain ‘in plain sight’ like strictly ground-dwelling species.

This species does not hibernate – in stable, warm conditions, it can remain active all year round.

Advantages of Polyrhachis hookeri

  • A unique look

Its distinctive silhouette and dark colouring create a very ‘exotic’ effect, quite different from that of more common species.

  • Tree-dwelling lifestyle

Perfect for setups where vertical space, climbing and an interesting terrarium layout are key.

  • An interesting observation in the terrarium

In a well-designed environment, much of the behaviour takes place at height, which offers a different perspective from the classic horizontal arena and nest setup.

  • No hibernation

    Year-round breeding, without overwintering.

  • A great choice for those looking for something a bit different

If you’ve already read the classics and want to move on to something a bit more exotic, this is the way to go.

How to set up a good setup

The nest and the arena

The most effective solutions are those that provide vertical surfaces and grip: cork, textured surfaces, wooden elements and twigs. The play area should include climbing features and hiding places. The more ‘vertical and textured’ it is, the better.

Humidity and ventilation

Maintain moderate to high humidity, but avoid stuffiness. Good ventilation is important, as epiphytic species prefer stable air without condensation or mould.

Feeding

Carbohydrates should be available at all times, and live food should be provided at reasonable intervals. This combination supports activity and growth.

If you’re looking for tree ants that look unusual, thrive in a vertical setup and can bring a truly exotic feel to your ant farm, Polyrhachis hookeri will be an excellent choice. Provide them with a vertical structure, twigs and cosy hiding places, and they will reward you with fascinating behaviour and a lifestyle completely different from that of the classic species found in horizontal enclosures.
