Description

Camponotus pilicornis – an elegant European Camponotus for your home forest in a formicarium

Camponotus pilicornis is one of the most interesting European Camponotus species. Its elegant two-tone colouring and calm, distinctive manner of movement make it a superb species for everyday observation. Native to Europe, it fits perfectly into formicaria themed around native woodlands, and thanks to its winter hibernation, it allows you to experience a full, natural annual cycle with the colony.

Detailed description Camponotus pilicornis

In the wild, Camponotus pilicornis is found mainly in southern and, to some extent, central Europe. It prefers warm, sunny forest edges, clearings and the edges of forest tracks. It may build its nests in wood, under bark, in humus or in the ground containing pieces of dead wood.

In breeding, this translates to the standard requirements for the European Camponotus:

  • during the season, it prefers a temperature of 22–26 °C,

  • appreciates a drier arena with sand and wooden elements,

  • the nest should be slightly more humid, but not excessively so,

  • In winter, it needs a period of hibernation at a lower temperature.

The queen measures approximately 14–16 mm, whilst the workers measure 5–10 mm, with slight size polymorphism. The colouration is two-toned and elegant: a darker thorax and abdomen, often with rusty or lighter accents, plus characteristic, heavily hairy antennae that distinguish the species visually. It looks very good on a light sandy substrate, and in a forest-themed formicarium it simply looks natural.

In the arena, Camponotus pilicornis isn’t as “frantic” as the smaller species. It moves more calmly but confidently, making it ideal for observation, photography and video recording. It forages efficiently, but without any frantic chaos.

Advantages of Camponotus pilicornis

  • A homely atmosphere

The perfect species if you want ants with a European flavour, rather than just something exotic.

  • An elegant two-tone colour scheme

The striking contrast between its body and hairy antennae makes the colony very photogenic.

  • Calm behaviour

These aren’t “little fleas” scurrying about non-stop. The movement is distinct, but more measured, which makes it easier to observe and work in the arena.

  • The natural annual cycle

Winter hibernation allows you to experience a full cycle of seasons with the colony and observe the difference between the ‘active season’ and ‘winter rest’.

How to keep Camponotus pilicornis in practice

Socket:

  • the best option is a plug or a well-made 3D print with a space for wetting,

  • one area is more humid, the rest drier, so that the ants can choose the best spot for their larvae and pupae themselves,

  • The chambers do not need to be very high, but they should allow taller workers to move around freely.

Arena:

  • a sandy substrate, mixed with fine gravel,

  • decorations made from bark, twigs and stones, which will emphasise the ‘woodland’ character of the species,

  • an escape barrier is necessary, although this species is not particularly prone to escaping.

Feeding:

  • carbohydrates: water with honey, carbohydrate gels, special ant mixes, served in small containers,

  • protein: insects (cockroaches, crickets, flies, larvae) 2–3 times a week,

  • Water: a drinking bowl lined with cotton wool or mesh, available at all times.

Hibernation:

  • In autumn, gradually lower the temperature,

  • 2–3 months at a temperature of 8–12 °C,

  • during this time, feeding was limited, and the ants were noticeably less active,

  • After hibernation, you gradually return to the seasonal temperature.

Who is this genre for?

  • for those who want European ants with a distinct personality,

  • for keepers who appreciate the calmer, more impressive Camponotus species,

  • for those who wish to experience the ants’ natural annual cycle, including hibernation.

If you’re looking for ants that will look elegant in an ant farm, fit in with the ‘mini forest’ on your desk, and let you experience the difference between the active season and their winter hibernation, Camponotus pilicornis is an excellent choice. Add this species to your basket, choose a forest-themed ant farm with a cork lid and wooden elements, and in return you’ll gain a peaceful, European colony that you can observe for years to come.
